There are a lot of reasons to think Siemens when it comes to drives, especially if the main controller in the project is Rockwell. Let’s face it, a number of companies have standardized on Rockwell PLCs because of the investment in intellectual property and experience their people have with the software. But does this extend to the peripherals like drives? Our experience is that in most cases the answer is no.
One of the most frequent reasons people have for choosing drives from the same manufacturer as the PLC is that “they will all work together easily.” What if you can buy an inverter or servo drive that was certified by ODVA for EtherNet/IP conformance testing and participated in the EtherNet/IP PlugFest? In other words, it’s just as easy to talk to a Siemens drive from a Rockwell PLC as it is a Rockwell drive.
