Banner Q5X Series

Banner Q5X Series

Banner Engineering’s Q5X Series has expanded from a 2 m triangulation sensor to include a time-of-flight sensor with an extended sensing range and an application-specific jam detection model to reliably detect jams on conveyor lines.

Key Benefits

The time-of-flight sensor has extreme detection reliability for phenomenal performance and solves even more applications than before for increased productivity.

The jam detection sensor quickly and accurately detects jams on conveyor lines without relying on gaps between packages, enhancing productivity, preventing damage to products, and reducing equipment wear.

Q5X time-of-flight laser sensor is a powerful, cost-effective addition to the successful Q5X series that expands the series maximum range from 2 m to 5 m. The 2 m triangulation sensor and 5 m time-of-flight sensor complement each other to solve a wide variety of applications. Triangulation technology is more robust in the near range while time-of-flight is more consistent across the entire range. This best-in-class laser sensor is durable, easy to use, and solves more applications with its increased sensing range.

Q5X Series sensors offer very high excess gain. The 5 m time-of-flight sensor has higher excess gain than the 2 m triangulation sensor as you get further away from the sensor for consistent detection of the darkest objects. This sensor is able to see < 0.1% reflective black surfaces, ensuring reliable detection of black rubber, foam, neoprene, and similar objects. It will also detect black targets against a black background, black targets against a shiny metal background, clear and reflective objects, multicolor packaging, and targets of all colors.

Typically, companies rely on low-cost, limited function sensors to detect gaps between objects on a conveyor or assembly line. However, it is becoming more typical to have packages side by side with no gaps, which can cause false positives. False and missed detection are common and can result in unnecessary stoppages on the line as well as damage to products and components.

Mounted on the side of the conveyor, the Q5X Jam Detection sensor extends the functionality of Banner’s existing dual mode technology to look for a change in signal strength and distance between the face for the sensor and the packages. Since it does not rely on gaps, it can detect jams faster and more accurately than conventional jam photo eyes. Two new teach modes are being introduced with the Q5X jam detection sensor: the jam retroreflective (JRET) mode and jam background suppression (JBGS) mode. JRET mode is the most reliable teach mode that can be used when teaching a back rail or other stationary target as a reference. The JBGS mode allows for jam detection across a specific area without the need for a background.
